Mauritius, in spite of being a well-developed country, still has areas of unspoiled nature where people can relax. Outside of the beaches, there are parks and nature reserves where Mauritians and tourists can enjoy nature and discover new sports and make memorable experiences. Here is a guide to some of the parks and natural reserves in Mauritius.

The Casela Nature & Leisure Park is located in the western part of the island of Mauritius between Flic en Flac and Tamarin. The park covers an area of approximately 14 hectares. In the park, you can see some 1500 birds of more than 150 species and a variety of impressive animals such as giant turtles and various mammals such as lions and monkeys. The park is decorated with a wide variety of beautiful plants and exotic flowers. In addition, there is the restaurant “Le Mirador” and a beautiful belvedere with a breathtaking view on the west coast. There is even a playground for children. Guided tours through the park are not offered but everyone receives a brochure at the entry, with brief descriptions of the different animals.

Visiting La Vanille Crocodile Park is a really special and unforgettable experience. Located in the south of the island (Rivière des Anguilles), this park shows you how was Mauritius prior to the cultivation of sugar cane. But there is much more to discover. You can find crocodiles and many other species of animals in a beautiful environment. You can also pet and feed the giant tortoises (Rs 10). If you enter the savanna and turn to the left, you will find the Adventure-Jungle-Playground, particularly pleasant for children. There is also a farm with goats, chickens, and donkeys. By exploring the park more and more, you can see iguanas, monkeys, bats, chameleons, and much more.

The Black River Gorges National park is the place to be if you like freestyle. The park is perfect for picnics with family, hiking and mountain biking. You don’t need a guide or special devices to enjoy the park, its trails are fairly well signposted and you should locate yourself without any problem. However, being accompanied by a local (or a guide) who knows the best spots is the best advice we could give you, especially if it is your first time.
